Team Report: Patriots

FFToolbox is in the process of interviewing websites that focus on a specific NFL team, in order to get an expert opinion on what the team will do in the upcoming NFL draft.

Our first interview is with James Christensen of NEPatriotsDraft.com

NEPatriotsDraft.com has been around since March of 2008, we provide insight into the NFL Draft, centering around the New England Patriots

1. What are the Patriots' biggest needs?

The two glaring needs for the Patriots are both on defense. In 2008, the Patriots had difficulty creating a pass rush, as Adalius Thomas was injured, and Mike Vrabel couldn't pick up the slack. Getting a rush-OLB and shoring up the defensive secondary are the top priorities.

2. Will they be able to address those needs via this year's draft or will they also need to be active in the free-agency market as well?

Depending on how the Patriots handle the Matt Cassel situation, they might not have much in the way of cap space at the start of FA. As of right now, the Patriots have about 22 million in cap space, 14 million of which would disappear the moment Cassel sigend his tender.

3. Which one player would be your dream pick / best case scenario for the Patriots' first pick?

Taylor Mays would be my dream pick at #24, as he would make a great duo with Brandon Meriweather, who really stepped up this year. Mays also has the bulk necessary to play the Patriots LB/S hybrid position a la Rodney Harrison.

4. What will it take for the Patriots to get to the playoffs in 2009?

A healthier team would help do that, although a healthy QB (Matt or Tom) is all they need to get it done with Bill Belichick in house.

5. Do you expect the Patriots to put the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Cassel? If so, does that mean that Tom Brady won't be ready for the 2009 season or will they trade Cassel?

I'd expect the Patriots to either tag Cassel or sign him to a 2yr/$20 million fully guaranteed type contract that is easy to trade. That would give the Patriots a little more flexibility, and would give Cassel a little more guaranteed money.
