2013 NFL Mock Draft

Round 1 of 2

1. KC: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
The trade for Alex Smith and resigning Tyson Jackson vaults OL and CB (lost CB Brandon Carr to Dallas last season) to the top of Andy Reid's wish list. OT Eric Winston was released but franchise tagging Branden Albert likely means he'll be the starting LT for at least one more season (despite trade rumors). Ultimately the Chiefs draft the #1 OL prospect on many draft boards. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder should be a fixture for the next decade.
2. JAX: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Finding multiple difference makers on the D-Line is a high priority as the Jags ranked 30th against the run and had the fewest sacks (20) in the NFL this past season. Jacksonville's 2010 1st round pick Alualu has been a huge disappointment. Floyd's versatility (played DT and DE at Florida) has his draft stock on the rise. The 6-3, 303 pounder led the team in tackles for a loss (13)and recorded two blocked kicks this past season. He would be an ideal fit for the Jags 4-3 defense.
3. OAK: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
Oakland needs major upgrades on defense as they generated the 2nd fewest sacks in the NFL last season. DT Tommy Kelly was cut and Richard Seymour is unlikely to return. Finding talent at cornerback is also a must as they got so desperate that they converted safety Michael Huff to CB (now in Baltimore) with very poor results. Lotulelei has a solid combo of size/strength/agility. In 2011, he posted 43 tackles (9 for loss) and 1.5 sacks in 13 games. In this his senior season, he added 42 tackles (10 for loss) and 5 sacks.
4. PHI: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Not exactly a dream team season as Andy Reid will now be eating his cheese steaks in KC. Oregon's Chip Kelly will look to translate his up tempo offense to the NFL and enters his first NFL gig with a multitude of question marks. The defense has been a sieve especially in the backend as the Birds might look to overhaul their secondary (CBs Asomugha and DRC will be playing elsewhere). LT Jason Peters should be fully recovered the ACL injury that sidelined him for the entire 2012 season but Todd Herrmans is best suited to play guard (filled in at Tackle this past season). Despite hailing from a small school, the 6-foot-8, 305-pound Fischer's versatility has him climbing draft boards as he's played RT, OG, LT over his collegiate career.
5. DET: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
DE Cliff Avril signed with Seattle and Kyle Vanden Bosch has been released. Jordan is in the conversation as the best pass rusher in this class and his versatility (played defensive end and linebacker in college) has his stock on the rise as he's shown the ability to rush the passer and drop in coverage. Detroit's secondary also needs to add talent as injuries and lack of depth led to major pass defense issues (CB Chris Houston was smartly resigned).
6. CLE: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
The pass rush could use a play maker (middle of the pack with 38 sacks in 2012). Jabaal Sheard led the team in sacks with only seven. Ansah is raw but burst onto the scene as a senior with 62 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, nine passes broken up in 2012. His athletic ability has some comparing him to JPP of the G-men. Bolstering the interior of the offensive line is also an area need to address in order to build their offense around Trent Richardson.
7. ARI: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Protection is major issue for whoever Arizona decides will be under center in 2013 as the Cardinals led the league in sacks allowed. The Bama senior (6-3, 320) has started 39 games over the last three years helping the Crimson tide average 439 yards of total offense. James Harrison was cut and the Steelers tied for 15th in sacks in 2012 so a pass rusher (especially at LB) is also a must early in the draft. Arizona could also use major help defense as they need to upgrade their pass rush especially at LB. Darnell Dockett will be 32 when the season kicks off and battled injuries in 2012 - adding depth opposite Calais Campbell would be wise.
8. BUF: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
QB Ryan Fitzgerald was released and is difficult to believe the Bills plan to have Tarvaris Jackson starting week 1 so securing a future signal caller should take priority. This QB crop is a major step down from 2012 (Ryan Tannehill got drafted at #8 last year) but Smith sits ahead of the class despite laying an egg in the Bowl game loss to Syracuse. The 6-foot-3, 214-pounder has completed 71% of his passes in 2012 for 4,004 yards, 40 touchdowns and six interceptions.
9. NYJ: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The J-E-T-S are in salary cap hell so will need to use the draft wisely if they hope to return to the playoffs in the near future. A major problem for the defense is improving an anemic pass rush. Mingo leads LSU with 12 quarterback hurries, and has 33 tackles this season, including 5.5 tackles for a loss and 4.0 sacks. Even with a healthy Santonio Holmes - an upgrade is sorely needed as the Jets will be grooming a new QB in 2013.
10. TEN: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
The entire defense needs a face lift. The Titans 25th ranked run defense allowed 130 YPG. Adding pass rush and pass coverage talent will need to be addressed early and often this offseason. The Bama junior has 51 tackles, two INTs, 1.5 sacks in 2012 and is tied for 2nd in the nation with 20 total passes defensed.
11. SD: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
LT Jared Gaither battled through injuries which had Phil Rivers running for his life. Johnson has only played OT for two seasons but his combo of long arms and athleticism has his stock on the rise. The Melvin Ingram pick was a solid move but he could use help to take the pass rush to the next level. Cornerback is major area of need as the Charger pass defense has struggled.
12. MIA: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State*
The 6-2, 215 pound redshirt junior has 35 tackles, seven passes broken up and three interceptions in 2012. He has a solid size/speed combo with above average hands and would be a welcomed addition to a Miami secondary that saw top CB Sean Smith sign with Kansas City. The very replaceable Richard Marshall is coming off back surgery. Trading Vontae Davis to Indy was a mistake as Miami's pass defense fell to 27th in the NFL.
13. NYJ: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
The Jets acquired this pick as part of the Darrelle Revis trade to Tampa. Both LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell are gone. Vaccaro is high motor player that is solid in run support with fluid coverage skills. He's been durable (25 consecutive starts) and amassed 257 tackles over his collegiate career (only 5 career INTs is somewhat concerning).
14. CAR: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
The Panthers run defense has been subpar and they are consistently gashed up the center of the D-line. The junior tackle became Mizzou's first-ever All-SEC (2nd-team) selection. He led all SEC interior linemen with 75 tackles.
15. NO: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia*
The Saints must upgrade a pathetic defense as their anemic pass rush and below average secondary must be addressed if they expect to sniff the playoffs in 2013. Character concerns make Ogletree a high risk / high reward pick. The junior was arrested for a DUI and suspended the first four games of this season but amassed 99 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, and two sacks in 2012. He's a freakish athlete that could help to solidify the interior of new DC Rob Ryan's 3-4 defense.
16. STL: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Rookie Brian Quick failed to produce in 2012 and Danny Amendola is in New England. What Austin lacks in size (5-9, 176) he makes up for in big plays. The playmaker has 110 receptions for 1,259 yards and 12 touchdowns this year. The dual threat also posted 61 carries for 598 yards.
