2013 NFL Mock Draft

Round 1 of 2

1. KC: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
Kansas City needs to get better protection up front to really take a step forward this year, otherwise Alex Smith will be like the player he was for San Francisco his first six years in the league, not his last two. Joeckel is a combination of a top talent with low risk. The only other scenario I can imagine is Kansas City trading down from this spot.
2. JAX: Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon
Jordan is very long with the body and athleticism to add another 20 lbs. and not lose any speed or ability. This pick is based on Jordan with another 20 lbs. of muscle when he will be nearly unblockable. He adds added value because of his ability to play standing up and drop into coverage. Great addition to the worst defense in football last year.
3. OAK: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Some people think Geno Smith is going to go here, but they don't need to overdraft a QB with a few other elite prospects still on the board. Floyd is the top rated defensive tackle because of his ability to pressure the QB from the inside of the line.
4. PHI: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Philly has a big need along the offensive line, particularly at RT. Fisher would join the team and be the most athletic right tackle in the league and don't forget that RT is Vick's blind side. Fisher is huge with very little fat, capable of fitting right in with the high paced offense Chip Kelly wants to run. If Jason Peters can return all the way from his injury, they will have a very good duo of bookends to build around.
5. DET: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
At this point, Detroit has the best pair of defensive tackles in the NFL, and the worst pair of defensive ends in the NFL. Ansah makes a lot of sense here because defensive end it their biggest need and Ansah fits their system and can continue to develop as a defensive end, instead of a 3-4 team converting him to OLB. Ansah brings freakish athleticism and reminds me of Javon Kearse.
6. CLE: Dee Milliner, CB, Detroit
Ray Horton is the new defensive coordinator and was the cornerbacks coach with the Steelers and would really enjoy having two lock down cornerbacks on his defense like Joe Haden and Dee Milliner. Milliner brings good speed to match up with smaller, quicker receivers, and also plays physical and smart against bigger receivers, which is good because there is a plethora of both in the NFL right now.
7. ARI: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
The Cardinals, surprisingly, seem to be alright with their offensive tackles, so they opt for the top guard prospect to come our in the past decade. Warmack is a machine in run blocking as he effortlessly plows through anyone in his way. He is good in pass protection as well and will provide needed time for new QB, Carson Palmer.
8. BUF: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
At first, when I thought of Nassib going in the top ten, before Geno Smith, it made me laugh a little bit. However, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Buffalo's head coach and offensive coordinator both came from Syracuse and want to install a similar offensive system. Why waste time teaching someone else from scratch when you have a proven product in this system.
9. NYJ: Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU
Mingo brings a dynamic type of player to the front seven who can be moved around and play from all over the field. He is also still a bit raw, but is exploding with potential!!! He will improve the pass rush immediately and don't be surprised if he ends up being the best defensive player out of this draft.
10. TEN: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
I had Star rated as the top overall prospect in the entire draft for a VERY long time. The concerns with his heart have been deemed a non issue which is a relief. I still believe Star is the best defensive tackle in this draft who I compare to Haloti Ngata. He will soon be the center of attention on this defense and a regular at the pro bowl, if it still exists.
11. SD: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
San Diego will be lucky and thrilled if Johnson lasts until pick 11. I have seen mocks recently that have the top 3 tackles going in the top 5 picks and Kiper has Joeckel, Fisher, Johnson, 1, 2, 3 on his big board. Johnson is not as good right now as Joeckel or Fisher, but he has the potential to be better then both. He has not been playing offensive tackle for a long time, entering Oklahoma as a tight end, which shows his athleticism.
12. MIA: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama*
Jonathan Martin is expected to slide over the left tackle, which leaves a gaping hole at right tackle. Fluker is top right tackle prospect in the draft because of his imposing size and power. He is a road grader in the running game and is part of the reason 2013 could cap the third straight year of Alabama producing a first round running back. He is not as good of a tackle prospect as Jake Long, but he will lessen the loss and give Tannehill enough time to fire some deep balls to Mike Wallace.
13. NYJ: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
This is a little high for Eifert, but he can help this offense in a number of different ways. He is a safety valve, a down field threat, someone who can split the seams in the middle of the field, a very dangerous red zone target, amongst other things. The Jets lost Dustin Keller and need to add a replacement. Eifert will be a big improvement..
14. CAR: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
Carolina resigned Dwan Edwards, but he is not any type of real force and more of a complimentary player. Richardson is the type of player offenses need to game plan around. Richardson has a quick burst and is very good rushing the passer. He plays with high energy, makes a lot of tackles and reminds me a little of Geno Atkins, who is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL.
15. NO: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas*
New Orleans can take a chance on an OLB with health issues or pick the best safety in the draft, who can play either safety position and is good at all aspects of the game. Vaccaro will help this defense in more ways then any other player at this point because of his ability to help both the pass defense and run defense. We have seen the way a good safety can transform an NFL defense, and Vaccaro is the caliber of safety who is capable of doing that.
16. STL: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
St. Louis is apparently in love with Austin and he would be a very good addition to their offense because of his ability to help in so many different ways. Austin is a playmaker, plain and simple, who is a little smaller then Percy Harvin, but will help this offense in much the same way. He won't have as many handoffs as Harvin did, but St. Louis will get him the ball on swing passes and quick outs. He is the most explosive player in the draft and will also give the Rams a dynamic return man.
