2013 NFL Mock Draft

Round 1 (part 2) of 2

17. PIT: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia*
Jason Worilds will be taking over James Harrison's old spot, but he has not convinced anyone that he is the long term solution and this defense can not operate without a pass rush. Jones is the best pass rusher in the draft and has been the best pass rusher in college football for the past two seasons. He fits best in the 3-4 system that the Steelers play and will transition quickly from the SEC to the NFL. Jones will help the secondary, by giving the QB less time with the ball and is a huge step towards getting back to the Steel Curtain defense that we remember.
18. DAL: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
Dallas is very fortunate to have an offensive linemen as talented as Cooper still be on the board and they run to the podium to make this selection. Cooper is more athletic and versatile then Warmack, but is not far behind in power either. He can play guard or center and be a good pulling left guard who excels at hitting moving targets and playing on the run. He will form a nice left side of the offensive line next to Tyrone Smith.
19. NYG: Cornellius Carradine, DE, Florida State
This is a perfect landing spot for Tank, because he will be able to fully recover from his injury and transition to the NFL as a situational player, and add an immediate impact as a pass rusher, where he has been described as ''a bull in a china shop''. This team is at its best when they consistently have faster, fresher pass rushers on the field who are constantly pressuring the QB. Carradine was very good before his injury, and had he not gotten hurt last year, he could have been a top 5 pick.
20. CHI: Manti Te'o, ILB Notre Dame
Te'o brings similar on the field leadership to Urlacher and will gain the respect of his teammates very quickly with his work ethic and leadership qualities. Te'o is a very smart, instinctual linebacker who will fit in very well on a defense known for causing turnovers (Te'o had 7 interceptions in 2012).
21. CIN: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia*
Even with the signing of James Harrison, he only has a year or two left, this defense could take a big step by adding another impact linebacker. Ogletree will probably play on the inside for this team, but because of his athleticism he brings added benefit with the versatility to play multiple linebacker positions. Cincinnati is known as an organization that takes risks on players with character concerns, but if he stays focused on football, he could be the best linebacker out of this draft.
22. STL: Eric Reid, S, LSU
St. Louis has a big need at safety and a player as talented as Reid with as much upside as any safety in the draft, is too tempting to pass up. Reid is big with long arms which helps him in coverage, but he is not shy about coming up and laying the thunder down of somebody.
23. MIN: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Patterson has all the tools to become an elite receiver, the reason he is still on the board is because he only has one year of experience of SEC football and there is not a lot of tape to go back to. Bill Polian called him ''very raw.'' With that being said, he had a great year last year, showing deep speed and better elusiveness then you would expect from a receiver his size.
24. IND: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State*
Rhodes is a big safety with comparable size to Seattle standout Richard Sherman. Rhodes possesses the strength to play bump and run and make it difficult for receivers to get off the line of scrimmage. As big and physical as Rhodes is, the best part of his game is his coverage ability. He can blanket receivers downfield and will provide good value here for a major position of need for this defense.
25. MIN: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Williams is strong and extremely stout against the run and should see action immediately on this defensive line. He also has enough quickness at his size to either plug holes or split offensive linemen. He also has the punch and leg drive to just collapse the pocket. This will be a welcomed addition to a defensive line starved for youth.
26. GB: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
Green Bay maintains one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL, with the worst stable of running backs in the NFL, by far. Eddie Lacy will help right away because of his ability to consistently pick up positive yardage, he will create a lot more short yardage situations for this offense. The best thing Lacy may bring will be a threat out of the backfield and better balance so that defenses can't sit back and play the pass all day. Lacy will score a lot of touchdowns next year and could win offensive rookie of the year.
27. HOU: Keenan Allen, WR, California
Allen will be a great compliment to Andre Johnson and this dominant running game. Allen has the ability to help right away going deep and on intermediate routes. Is actually a similar receiver to Johnson, both in build and the way they play the game. This could become intimidating for defenses to have two strong receivers who will fight for the ball and provide plenty of big play options going play action.
28. DEN: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
Denver needs to replace the pass rush this defense lost with Elvis Dumerville and Werner can give them another pass rushing threat. Werner plays 110% and through the whistle on every snap, which is contagious for a defense. Werner also provides a better run defender then Dumerville and a player with limited experience playing football. Some appear to think he has a lower ceiling because of his limited athleticism, but I see a similar player to Jared Allen.
29. NE: D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston
Hayden had a freak injury last year, with a 95% fatality rate, where he had a vein disconnect from his heart. He beat those adds and survived, recovered and looked extremely fast, quick and athletic in his post season workouts. He is also very physical and loves blitzing, which should fit in well with this defense. After Dennards recent trouble with the law, New England should definitely bring in some more talent at the cornerback position.
30. ATL: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
The Falcons are one of the teams that has been discussed recently of having serious interest in moving up in the first round. However if they stay here, they would benefit greatly from adding a cornerback as talented as Trufant. San Francisco exploited this secondary last year and Trufant as a tough and physical corner for his size who can play tight coverage down field and also be a playmaker and create turnovers for this defense.
31. SF: Jonathan Cyprien, SS, Florida International
Dashon Goldson was a big part of this defense, impacting the game all over the field with his playmaking and bone shattering hits. Well they replace him with ''the hardest hitting safety in the league'', I hope somebody gets that. Cyprien really impressed in workouts, showing up looking very jacked and playing with an aggressive playing temperament. He will find a home quickly as the starting strong safety on this already very impressive defense.
32. BAL: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
Baltimore is lucky to have a linebacker of Minter's quality drop to them as the last pick in the first round. He doesn't have the fastest forty time (4.7), but he plays faster because he is very instinctive and takes good angles which shows his intelligence in some of the small nuances of the position. He should be able to take over the starting positions immediately.
