2007 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
personJoe Staley, T, Central Michigan
Having played his college ball at Central Michigan, Staley is little known outside of NFL scout circles and remains a hidden gem for the time being. That will no longer be the case come combine time, and the offensive tackle will certainly make a name for himself on NFL Draft day. A converted tight end, Staley possesses unique athletic ability for an offensive lineman. In fact, at 6'6'' and 296 pounds, he still looks like a tight end or perhaps an oversized defensive end. Staley, however, put his skill set to good use at OT for Central Michigan and he'll continue to do so at the next level. He can run as fast as 4.81 in the forty and has outstanding agility and lateral movement to go along with that speed. An outstanding pass blocker, Staley makes getting around him very tough for defensive ends. Staley's weakness is that he is pretty lean for an OT and is not able to deliver an authoritative initial punch off the line. He'll have to bulk up even more to become a Pro Bowler, but Staley's athletic ability should be enough to merit a late first-round or early second-round pick at the draft.
