2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn

Groves came into the 2007 campaign with big expectations after a solid junior season in which his 9.5 sacks were the third highest total in the Southeastern Conference. He also had 37 tackles (26 solo), which helped him garner first-team all-conference recognition from the coaches and the Associated Press. Unfortunately, Groves suffered dislocated toes in 2007 that sidelined him for two games and limited his playing time in two others. He also spent significant time at outside linebacker, all of which impacted his stats -- 38 tackles (23 solo), seven tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. He was named to the all-conference first team by the coaches and second-team by AP. He ranks second in the nation among active players with 26 career sacks.

Speed is the strength of Groves' game. He runs a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and has a good closing burst. He has the ability to cover a lot of ground with his quickness, which makes him good in pursuit. He's a reliable tackler. The questions about him start with his tendency to take plays off. He's also undersized to play on the line, with most scouts viewing him as being slow off the ball and lacking the strength to be a power rusher, since he struggles at times to get off blocks.

Many scouts project Groves as a linebacker in the NFL, with him likely better suited for a 3-4 scheme. He'll play in the Senior Bowl at end of January, which could go a long way in determining his draft slot. He currently projects to a be a second-round selection.
