2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Todd Boeckman, QB, Ohio State

Todd Boeckman is an interesting prospect. Boeckman is a huge quarterback with a big time arm, but is also very immobile. During his career at Ohio State he has appeared in 25 games and completed 64 percent of his passes, showing good touch on throws to all parts of the field. Last year (his first as a starter), Boeckman led Ohio State to its second straight National Championship Game. He completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 2379 yards and 25 touchdowns on a team that features the run with Chris Wells. Boeckman did throw 14 interceptions, but 2 of them came in the championship game when the Buckeyes had to force the action to try to get back into the game. One of the things that limits Boeckman is his slow set up. He is most comfortable in a 5 to 7 step drop, and takes a while to scan the field and set to throw. This slow set up means his offensive line must sustain pass protection much longer than with most quarterbacks. The emergence of Terelle Pryor has dropped Boeckman's stock because his time on the field was extremely scarce most of the season. Pryor presents defenses with a dual threat that Boeckman can't. At this point (because he has lost his starting job) Boeckman likely won't be considered by teams until the seventh round, if at all. He did perform admirably when called on, completing 61.3 percent of his passes this year for 620 yards. He also threw 5 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. If he can have a good pro day performance, Boeckman could still be considered as a developmental project in the sixth round.
