2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Fili Moala, DT, USC

Moala has a great first step / deceptive speed (he is in the 5.10-40 range) for such a big body. He has the bulk and strength to be a terrific run stuffer, playing with good leverages. Commanding double teams, Moala pushes the pile with his raw power. Despite his size, Moala moves surprisingly well laterally and gets off the ball quickly. He is able to shed blockers with ease and is a very good tackler who leaves his mark on most hits. Mack has been very durable and has improved every year; he is a very active inside player. He is not a great overall athlete. He has not demonstrated the ability to create plays on his own and lacks pass rushing technique. He is also not flexible enough and does not have the balance to breakdown in space. He did not produce a lot of plays outside the box for the Trojans. Despite being selected to the Third All American Team, Moala was overshadowed by a plethora of USC stars. Notwithstanding this fact, he is a very active player who will command double teams in the NFL. He will not fill the stat sheets on a weekly basis, but his presence will be felt. His good Senior Bowl week pushed his stock up from a mid-to-early third round prospect into the bottom of the first or early second round area.
