2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Justin Forsett, RB, California

Forsett is a shifty runner with incredible vision and speed. He is a tremendous cut-back runner and he finished second in the Pac-10 in rushing with 1,546 yards and a 5.1 ypc average. He displays outstanding initial burst and a second-gear to run away from defenders in the open field. He is a fluid and smooth athlete and can be incredibly elusive in space. Forsett runs with good balance and body-control. He reminds me of a poor man's Maurice Jones-Drew, running with incredible power in spite of his small stature. Forsett is a very good receiver out of the backfield and is a decent blocker in pass pro (which could mean he'll contribute early as a third down running back in the NFL). Also, he has some experience returning kicks at California and displays upside as a returner in the NFL. Forsett lacks ideal size for an NFL running back at under 190 pounds, but he has drastically improved his draft status with a great showing in Senior Bowl practices. He has surprised many Senior Bowl scouts with his power and elusiveness. Forsett chose not to run at the combine and will make teams wait for his times for a personal workout. Teams are not concerned about his running times, they are more concerned about his size. Forsett will be a good player, but his draft status is tough to predict with such a deep running back class. Forsett ran the 40 in 4.62 and 4.73, which was disappointing for a back of his size. He seems to play faster than his times indicate. He had a 31-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 9-inch long jump, and ran 4.46 short shuttle, and a 7.15 cone drill. Forsett improved his forty time at Cal's pro day by running a 4.59, but did not improve enough to make himself a first day pick. It is reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have shown interest in Forsett.
