2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Dustin Keller, TE, Purdue

During his time at Purdue, Dustin Keller has transformed from lightly recruited wide receiver to one of the top tight ends in the country. Keller's success, along with that of Kellen Davis and Travis Beckum, is going a long way toward changing the image of the old "three yards and a cloud of dust" style tight ends of the Big Ten's past. While Dustin Keller is an adequate blocker, his money will be made as a pass catching tight end in the NFL. Keller has notched back to back seasons of over 700 yards receiving for the Boilermakers -- catching 11 touchdowns over the last two years. He has good speed for a tight end and Keller has one of the best pair of hands in the country, wide receivers included. What makes him hard to cover for most linebackers and safeties is his ability to go up and get balls high over the middle. Keller set Indiana high school receiving records with his 113 catch, 1804 yard, 22 TD senior season. He also was the state runner up in the high jump as a junior, jumping 6'10" and capped that with a state championship winning with a 6'9" jump as a senior. Keller finished his season strong, catching 7 passes for 150 yards and a TD against Central Michigan. A good all star performance and combine could see his stock rise even further. Keller can use his speed to help stretch the seam in the pros or use his leaping ability to make tough catches in the red zone. This fifth year senior should be off the board by the end of the fourth round. According to the Lafayette Journal and Courier, Keller declined an invitation to the 2008 Senior Bowl. This is not surprising, after the way he finished his career. He leaves the scouts with a 7 catch, 150 yard, and 1 TD performance as his last game film to judge. A strong showing at the combine should solidify him as a top 4 tight end. Dustin Keller dominated the other tight ends at the NFL Combine. Keller ran a 4.55 40 yard dash -- fastest among all the tight ends. He also had the best vertical leap, 20 yard shuttle time, and broad jump of all his competition. Keller is small for a tight end, but his 26 reps on the bench press show he has the upper body strength to be an adequate blocker in the NFL. Keller could see his name called in the third round, or possibly the end of the second round. Dustin Keller continues to amaze. The Purdue University tight end might be the most athletic prospect in the whole draft. Keller could have sat on his stellar combine numbers, but instead came out at Purdue's pro day and upped his vertical leap to 41 inches. He also ran the short shuttle 3.94 seconds. Keller has solidified himself as one of the top two tight ends in this class. Keller could be taken anywhere from the end of the first round to the middle of round two.
