2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Geno Hayes, ILB, Florida State

There is little doubt about Geno Hayes' ability on the field. As a junior during the 2007 campaign, the linebacker tallied 80 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception. When he was healthy he was the most dominating player on the Florida State defense. Hayes is a superb athlete who can put on the big hit and his quickness makes him a great sideline-to-sideline player. He has the skills to drop back in coverage and that versatility projects him to play the inside or outside linebacker spot. However, there are some concerns on and off the field. Hayes is a little undersized for the NFL and measured in at just under 6-1 at the combine. He will often run around blockers and lacks the strength to run through them. A career filled with injuries will also keep some teams away, but it is the off the field issues that will likely drop Hayes down to the middle rounds of the NFL Draft. He has had a couple run-ins with the law and the most recent was just resolved prior to the combine with the dropping of all charges. At the combine Hayes showed off his quickness and natural abilities, but the interview process was the most important. If teams believe his off-field issues are behind him, Hayes has the talent to be a third round selection. Hayes was also one of the many involved in the Seminoles academic scandal prior to this year's bowl game. Hayes has the skill and versatility to be a valuable linebacker in the right system. By the fourth or fifth round any team who was sold during the interview process would be happy to have his versatility on their team.
