2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Jeremy Maclin only has one full year under his belt, but it was a great year. The 6-1 wide receiver garnered 2,776 all-purpose yards -- an NCAA FBS record for a freshman and fifth-most all-time by any player. Most of those yards came from his 80 receptions in which he tallied 1,055 yards and nine touchdowns. But, of course, Maclin is about a lot more than simply receptions. He rushed for another 375 yards and four touchdowns and was one of the most dangerous returners in the game. He averaged 24.2 yards per kick-off return and reached the end zone one time that way. He also returned 25 punts for 307 yards and two touchdowns. At 6-1 and 200 pounds, Maclin has a rare blend of size and speed. Obviously there will be taller receivers out there, but not many in the NFL are 6-1 and 200 pounds and as fast as Maclin. He is not just a speed receiver either; he will break his fair share of tackles. NFL teams were interested in seeing what Maclin could do as a sophomore after his amazing freshman campaign. Since he did redshirt in 2006 with an injury, Maclin is three years out of high school and will be eligible for the draft after this season. This season has been pretty good so far. Through four games he already has four receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and returned one kick-off for a touchdown. If he keeps it up, Maclin will be one of the first receivers taken in the draft. 10/16 Update: So far it has been more of the same for Maclin. The wide receiver has caught 39 passes for 600 yards and five touchdowns. And that is just through six games. He has also done a fine job returning kicks and punts, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The numbers might not end up as high as they were last year, but Maclin is still a first-round talent and that will not change. 1/14 Update: Not surprisingly Maclin has declared for the 2009 NFL Draft after his redshirt sophomore campaign. Maclin was even more involved in the passing game as a sophomore than he was as a freshman. He caught an amazing 102 passes for 1,260 yards and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for another 293 yards and two scores and added a total of 1,280 return yards, including a kick-off and a punt returned for a touchdown. Maclin is a dynamic playmaker and he will not last very long come draft time.
