2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Geno Atkins, DT, Georgia

Atkins did not put up big numbers on defense last season, in part due to the fact that he received a ton of attention from opposing offensive lines. Furthermore, he started just three of 13 games and by defensive tackle standards, he is more of a pass-rush specialist. Still, Atkins recorded 36 total tackles, finished second on the team with 10.5 tackles for loss, and came in fourth on the team with three sacks. He also led the team with a whopping 33 quarterback hurries while also notching a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick. Atkins is a bit undersized (compared to the mammoths of the SEC and NFL) at 6'1' and 290 pounds, but he makes up for that in speed and quickness. He ran an impressive 4.75 in the 40-yard-dash at the NFL combine and his first step off the snap is especially lightning fast. Perhaps another year in Athens could have done Atkins some good, but there was a mass exodus (players and coaching staff alike) from a Georgia defensive that was already terrible, so his departure came as no surprise. Thanks to his standout off-season, Atkins find himself off the board as early as the third round in this month's draft.
