2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Auston English, DE, Oklahoma

Auston English only played in two games as a freshman in 2005 and then redshirted in 2006. But as a sophomore in 2007, English burst onto the scene and was named to the All-Big 12 first team. That year he tallied 9.5 sacks and a team high 13 tackles-for-loss. That is not bad for a sophomore on an Oklahoma defense that sported a ton of talent. His numbers slipped to 4.5 sacks and 9.0 tackles-for-loss during the 2008 campaign. At 6-3 and 253 pounds, English could be a defensive end or an outside linebacker, depending on the system. No matter where he ends up, English is certainly a productive player who can cause havoc in any backfield. However, his productivity is his best asset and he had to come back for his senior season to show that he could string together a few decent years. Through six games in 2009, he has 3.0 sacks and 9.5 tackles-for-loss. There is no sign of English slowing down any time soon. Oklahoma's 2009 season has not gone as planned, but that is not the fault of English or anybody else on the defense. English could still be selected in the first two or three rounds if he has a good NFL Combine and continues to be productive during the rest of his collegiate career. 1/19 Update: Unfortunately, English was added to the long list of Sooners who were injured in 2009 and only played in nine games. Like many of the other injured Oklahoma players, English will have to prove that his injuries are behind him if he hopes to get drafted relatively high. However, English is not Sam Bradford or Jermaine Gresham and even if he can stay healthy, English could end up being just a mid-round selection.
