Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama

Johnson arrived in Alabama as a walk-on running back.... What a difference a few years make. He ended his career as a two-year starter at safety and one of the main stars of the Crimson Tide defense. In his first full season as a starter in 2007, Johnson recorded 94 total tackles and six interceptions. He was named to the All-SEC First-Team by the conference's coaches. Johnson added 89 tackles and five picks last season and was once again an unanimous All-SEC First-Team selection. He does not have incredible size for a safety (6'0'' and 190 pounds), so he is not one of those prototypical huge-hitting defensive backs, but he is a good hitter and a standout in pass coverage. He has outstanding vision and is great at reading quarterbacks. He has been used occasionally at cornerback for those reasons and his speed (around 4.5 in the 40-yard-dash) could enable him to make a permanent move to the outside at the next level. One red flag over Johnson, however, is his arrest for disorderly conduct last February. He probably also needs to add some serious bulk if he is going to be an impact player on Sundays. Johnson looks like a bit of a project despite his experience, so he should be thrilled if he is off the board before the end of the second round in this month's NFL Draft.
