2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Drew Willy, QB, Buffalo

Willy started eight of ten games in his freshman season, completing 149 passes out of 246 attempts (60.6) for 1,481 yards with a 6-12 TD/INT ratio. In 2006, Willy started all of the eight games he played, posting 138-231 (59.1) for 1,391 with six TD and same number of interceptions. He came into his own during a spectacular Junior campaign, throwing for 2,572 yards on 258-377 (68.4) with 15 TD and six interceptions. A very competitive player who has complete command of the huddle, with good but not great arm strength. He is a very accurate passer, especially in the short to intermediate range area. Although, his accuracy greatly diminishes when throwing the deep ball. Willy is not physically gifted, and he is slow (4.88). He is also not very smooth and his throwing motion needs refinement. Willy plays on a simplified offensive system; A "Dink and Dunk" type of offense helps him pile up big numbers. However, his level of competition is a big concern. Willy is an intriguing, low level prospect who with a good season (and an even more impressive workout) could see himself drafted in the later stages of the second day. He does have many shortcomings as a QB, but is a natural leader. His skill sets are very similar to that of career backup Ty Detmer. He is a gamer who could find a niche as a third stringer.
