2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Adam Leonard, OLB, Hawaii

The product of Seattle, Washington, Leonard enrolled at Hawaii in 2005. That season, Adam played in eight games while registering only nine tackles with one for loss (FL) in a limited role. He had a breakthrough 2006 season in which he registered 112 tackles with 4 FL. He also managed to record his first sack while starting all of Hawaii's fourteen games. Last season, Leonard started all of the school's thirteen games and at the same time, he went on to record 105 tackles, 11.5 for loss plus two sacks. Small, but with a solid build, Leonard has good pass/run recognition skills. He diagnoses the plays well enough and is a good hitter (doing a good job shedding off would-be blockers). Slow (4.7), but he is not a great, natural athlete. He needs to shed some pounds. He also only has marginal coverage skill, tending to disappear at times and plays too short armed. Leonard is a marginal NFL prospect at this time. He does have value as a special teams player, but his lack of pure physical talent would probably limit his role in the NFL. He needs to shine in the Hawaiian Bowl against the Irish in order to improve his stock. If he loses a few pounds and somehow managed to reduce his 40 time, Adam could find his way into the later stages of the sixth round.
