2014 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M

This physically-imposing sophomore wreaked havoc across college football as Johnny Manziel's top target for the Aggies. Evans is a big-bodied, possession receiver with an amazing catching radius and basketball background that should make him something special as a red zone specialist in the NFL.

Evans lacks ideal straight line speed and is slow getting off the line. Physical and strong enough to beat press coverage, but simply adequate in his route running. Benefited greatly from finding mismatches in coverage against smaller defenders. Shows really good hand-eye coordination and can go up to get the ball at its highest point. Still growing as a receiver and learning the position's finer points.

Excellent run blocker. Holds the edge well. Shields the ball using his body. Made a lot of contested receptions and can hang onto the ball when going through traffic. Doesn't offer much after the catch, but can break arm tackles. Good body adjustment and seems to use his hands to attack the football out of the air. Reliable receiver with few drops.

Evans projects as first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Given his size and weight, many are making a comparison between Evans and Vincent Jackson. While Evans certainly has a knack for shielding defenders using his body like VJax, the young wideout will only turn 21 years old in late August 2014. Point being: he may not be done growing and will be more like a tight end with WR athleticism by the time his body matures. Evans will probably need a full year to develop, so his foreseeable rookie impact is minimal. Look for him to really take off in his second and third seasons.

Prediction: 1st Round

This so called "possession" WR has been tabbed as the next Calvin Johnson by talent guru Gil Brandt. I seem to remember another WR a few years back who wasn't noted for his straight line speed...think his name was JERRY RICE...

Prediction: 1st Round

Trade up by the SF 49ers. They have 6 picks in the top 100, 11 over all, and their championship window will last maybe 3-5 years at most. Eighty-three of the possible ninety-two QB's never returned to the Super Bowl more than THREE YEARS after their first appearance. The run at Desean Jackson was telling, and the time in SF to add the final pieces is NOW!
