2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Keegan Herring, RB, Arizona State

Herring is a steady, four year contributor to the Sun Devil's ground game. He began his career in 2005 with a 870-yard effort (158 attempts 5.5 per) and 6 TDs. Having a limited role in 20056 rushing for 584 yards (94-5.8-6 TDs), Herring rebounded with an impressive 2007 campaign in which he rushed for 815 yards on 154 carriers (5.3) and 6 TDs. But, continuing his spiral college career, Herring struggled this past season posting just pedestrian numbers (105-401-3.8-3 TDs). Herring is very fast (4.39), but most of the time he does not show it. With good, not great, hands, he is effective on screens and in space (but does not create enough on the second level). Slim, he needs to add bulk and upper body strength, because he is easy to bring down. Despite his superb speed, he does not break long runs on regular bases. Herring is one of those "crease" runners who lacks the bulk and overall ability to create for him. He was not a productive college runner. There's concern about his ability to stay healthy. Herring could be a good third down back, but needs to work harder. He is strictly a late rounder (sixth or seven) or, most likely, a priority free agent.
