2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama

In previous seasons, Arenas was mostly a return specialist; and one of the best in the nation at that. He was Alabama's top return man as a freshman and he finished second in the SEC as both a sophomore and junior in average yards per punt return. After getting occasional looks at cornerback during his first two seasons in Tuscaloosa, Arenas became a real defensive asset in 2008. He was not only named to the All-SEC First Team as a punt returner, but also as a cornerback. Through six games as a starter in his senior campaign, Arenas was second on the team with 22 tackles, third with three sacks, and also had one interception. He missed one of the Crimson Tide's first seven games due to a rib injury. Durability has not been a major issue for Arenas up to this point in his career, but it has to be called into question give his relatively small stature. He stands at just 5'9' and 195 pounds, which is acceptable for college but could be a problem at the next level. Arenas can make up for his height deficiency with speed and by playing physical football, but he will be overwhelmed at times by bigger NFL wideouts. His talent as one of the most dangerous return men in the nation, however, is undeniable. That alone will give Arenas an outside shot at a first-round selection in the 2010 draft. He will be a great pick for any team that needs an upgrade on special teams and depth in the secondary.
