2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Erik Lorig, DE, Stanford
Lorig has been a three year starter for the Cardinals. He played in all of the team's twelve games in 2006, recording 21 total tackles, 3 for loss. Lorig then won the starting right defensive end position prior to the 2007 season, and wenton to have a very solid campaign compiling 27 total tackles, 23 solo, 7.5 of them for loss (He also registered 2.5 sacks). Last year, Lorig made 19 unassisted tackles -- 39 total -- had 2 sacks and his first two Passes Broken Up. A top flight athlete who was the number two TE on the roster in 2006, Lorig is intense; he is at his best in the open field and on the move. Lorig plays with good leverage, is quick and versatile, with average straight line speed (4.85) and closing burst. He anticipates the snap well, consistently getting a good jump and showing above average explosiveness with first two steps. He is definitely a hard worker. However, Lorig needs to get bigger; he lacks lower body strength and base (he would get pushed around a bit at the next level). He also needs more experience in the passing game as he lacks great change-of-direction skills and doesn't have an explosive burst. He also has a bit of a suspect technique that needs to be worked on. Lorig is a good athlete, but his marginal speed spells trouble at the next level. He will struggle as a pure edge rusher. Nevertheless, he could become a solid contributor in the NFL, but must add bulk and strength first.
