2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Greg Jones, LB, Michigan St.
been the heart and soul of the Michigan State defense for the past two seasons. He is a three year starter who has steadily improved every year, leading the
Spartans in tackles each of the last two seasons. As a sophomore, Jones registered an impressive 127 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 3 passes broken
up in coverage. He improved upon that as a junior with 154 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, and a forced fumble. Jones has averaged 9.2 tackles per game
from his middle linebacker spot for his career. He has sideline to sideline speed, rarely letting a play go by without finding himself near the ball. He shows
excellent instincts in both man and zone coverages, and his speed allows him to stay with a variety of different receivers. The big question with Greg Jones is
his size. He has played middle linebacker for three seasons, but is extremely small for that position in the NFL. Some teams may view him as a weakside
linebacker, but he should be able to put on the 10 to 15 pounds necessary to play in the middle in the pros. If Jones had declared, he likely would have been a
late second or early third round pick. He has decided to return to Michigan State for his senior season, in all likelihood to add the extra muscle needed to
play middle linebacker in the NFL.
