2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State

One of the draft's up-and-comers, Mathews used a great junior campaign (1,808 yards, 150.7 ypg with 19 TDs) that included being voted to the AP All American Second Team, to get himself noticed in the eyes of every NFL scout. Though, his amazing 2009 season is hardly a one-year wonder. The product of Bakersfield, California, was well on his way to a monster sophomore campaign before suffering an injury in the UCLA game which sidelined him for most of the year. Has great speed (4.49) and cutting back ability. A smooth and explosive runner. Can plant his foot and cut on a dime. Is a big-play back that has shown he can take over games. Plays his best against top competition (raked 240 yards against then #5 Boise State). Has good hands. Runs strong after the catch. However, has a small frame with a narrow hip base. Needs to add upper body strength. Is not an aggressive runner inside. Does not attack defenders well. Is not a solid pass blocker who tends to miss an occasional assignment. Many teams will fall in love with Mathews' sheer athleticism and big play ability. His versatility and explosiveness would make him an attractive second round candidate. He is a solid, change of pace back with very good upside.

Prediction: 1st Round

Mathews might be the most complete back in the draft and will no doubt be a solid pro and worth the first round pick.
