2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Josh Pinkard, FS, USC

Pinkard had an injury-plagued career at USC. After performing mostly backup duties during his first two years (2004 and 05), the former high school All American missed much of his freshman season after tearing up ligaments on his right knee during his first college start against Arkansas. He tore up the same ligaments, this time on his left knee, prior to the start of the 2007 season. Pinkard then reclaimed some ground in 2008 while playing CB by recording 39 tackles (2.5 for loss), forcing 2 fumbles and recording his first interception in two years during a healthy junior campaign. He had a solid senior year with career bests in tackles (59), passes broken up (9) while doubling the interception total (2). Strengths: Has a good height and the frame to get bigger. His size allows him to go one-on-one with taller receivers. Is an aggressive player with good instincts to play the run. Is smooth and has good initial burst. Weaknesses: Injury plagued. Lacks top speed (4.66est) and a second gear. Limited range. Will have trouble against smaller and quicker slot WRs. Must improve recognition skills. Effort seems inconsistent. Lacks great lower body strength. Does not shift into gear while backpedaling. Lacks experience playing the position. Pinkard is a nice story after coming back from two devastating knee injuries. Unfortunately, the injuries stole a step or two, making him a big time liability at corner. Still, he has the size and desire to warrant a late round flyer. A backup at best, Pinkard is a training camp body at worse.
