2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Blake Gideon, FS, Texas

Blake Gideon overachieved in Texas' secondary. He has a nice frame, but struggles in too many facets to warrant consideration in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Gideon will not blow anybody away with his physical skills. He reads the ball well and has very good instincts. He maximizes that skill by being able to close on the ball and occasionally force a turnover. But this is only a small part of what NFL safeties have to do in today's NFL. Gideon really struggles with the fundamentals of football, whether it be getting in and out of his breaks or being a consistent tackler if asked to drop down into the box. He takes poor angles, lacks burst or a suddenness to his game and isn't fast enough to keep up with most wide receivers.

In man coverage, his feet get tied up and he shows questionable hip movement. He would struggle to wrap up tight ends and doesn't have range to properly cover any more than a deep Cover 2. Scouts want to see a safety who is either big and physical with contact or small, quick and rangy; Gideon is neither.
