2013 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Matt Elam, SS, Florida
Elam can work as either a strong or free safety. Not only can he stack the box and provide excellent run support, he's a natural in coverage. Really looks to lay the wood on every play. Could wrap up better with his arms, though. Seals the edge well when coming down into the box. Very passionate teammate, lets his emotions fly.
Sometimes caught watching the eyes of the quarterback. Will need to show he is fast enough to cover a deep half. Elam forced a huge fumble downfield during Florida's upset over LSU, really illustrating his high intensity. Not a natural ball hawk and needs to look for the ball more often rather than making the big hit.
He is athletic enough to cover tight ends; taller receivers may cause issues because he is only 5'10". If he runs well at the combine, he could sneak into the first round.
Elam projects as an early second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
