Nico Johnson, ILB, Alabama

Alabama Crimson Tide inside linebacker Nico Johnson should be able to contribute on first and second down immediately, but in the long-term, he must continue to improve his coverage and pass rushing talents.

Johnson blasts through the crowd and can get to the ball-carrier a step ahead of most other defenders. This isn't because of speed or athleticism, it comes down to read, recognition and reaction. Flows with the pile very nicely. Squares up through the running lane, stays on assignment very well and is a handful at the point of attack. Great technique and fundamentals. Lacks great athleticism. Intelligent, blue-collar style of play will carry him. A hustle player.

Long arms and decent frame to challenge passes. Will struggle keeping up with athletic tight ends. Good pursuit angles and plays the run at a high level. Clean lateral movements with few wasted steps. Nice snap to his tackles. Brings down players in one swift motion. Will struggle in open field against speedy players. Can hogtie players consistently around the legs and ankles. Pass rushing is a major concern, basically a non-factor.

Prediction: 3rd Round

Seems to pay too high for a LB. Doesn't tackle as well as you think he should. Good speed.
