2014 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State

In a quarterback-hungry NFL, it seems every QB prospect under the sun receives some brief attention as a potential first rounder. Carr is currently the rising QB du jour. Will his hype fizzle like Ryan Nassib in 2013? Or will his stock continue to rise like Ryan Tannehill in 2012 or even Christian Ponder in 2011?

Carr is the younger brother of former No. 1 pick David Carr and followed in his brother's footsteps to Fresno State. Carr benefited from playing in Fresno State's prolific offense against lesser competition. Scouts will be monitoring him very closely over the next few months as some even project him as a possible Top 10 pick.

Carr shows good on-field leadership and intelligence. Played out of the shotgun, so he will need some grooming when it comes to playing under center, taking drops, reading the defense, etc. Did show an above-average ability to go through progressions. Plays under duress poorly. Rushes throws. Abandons technique and did make some questionable decisions with the football. Accuracy is below-average. Above-average arm strength. Deep ball lacks necessary velocity.

Moves well laterally in and out of the pocket. Average feel for the rush. Pulls trigger quickly and would be a good fit in a West Coast style offense.

Carr projects as a mid-first round pick if quarterbacks are snatched up early, but grades out to late second to early third rounder on pure potential and talent.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Carr's draft value is very volatile and so too is his fantasy value. Like most rookie QBs, he would be better off with at least one full year on the sidelines. If he goes in the first two rounds to a QB-needy team, Carr would be a fantasy backup with the occasional QB2 peaks in redraft leagues. Dynasty owners should give him a look in the third round of their rookie draft.
