2013 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Given his terrific height and huge catching radius, Escobar could develop into an elite talent at his position. Blessed with catcher's mitts for hands, he can catch the ball away from his body and rarely allows the ball to hit his chest. Not an outstanding leaper, but does a nice job attacking the ball at its highest point and coming down with the catch.
Moves well off the line and doesn't seem to lumber considering his size. Breaks well to gain separation during his route tree. Lacks great explosion, yet he does manage to display a noticeable body control and can shield defenders away from the ball. Needs to continue to get a feel for reading coverages and finding open areas in zone. Can work the middle of the field with no problems. Long stride speed and can certainly get behind a linebacker for the big play.
Blocking is lacking right now and will have growing pains as an inline blocker. This is something that could keep him off the field and he'll need to find the right fit at the next level. His frame does afford him some upside, but it will take time for him to learn techniques and protections. Core strength is absent.
Escobar projects as a late second to early third round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
