2/24 CoachTrosky's Mock Draft (Round 2)

Author's Comments

This round does not reflect trades. Although trades are less eminent this year, I believe the Patriots will trade back for more picks.

1 - KC: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
I think KC forks over the money for Albert. In doing so, I still think they take Joeckel to man the right hand side. This would be a great tackle pair for the next 5 years. The Chiefs can look for a developmental QB in the 3rd round, while building their team. Do not sell out for a QB here. Geno Smith is good, but Joeckel is the sure fire bet here.
2 - JAX: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
The Jaguars missed on Tebow, a Florida product a few years ago. They do not miss here. Floyd is a tremendous defensive lineman, who can play 3-4 or 4-3. He is in attack mode all the time, strong, thick, quick and pressure focused up front. Bradley makes his mark early by building the middle of the defense.
3 - OAK: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
Rumors have it that Oakland is loving Smith. Palmer played well last year which gives Smith time to develop. Raiders will not feel pressure to plug him in right away. Yet, he is an athletic specimen, who can throw. His leadership skills were questioned, but here is the future of the Oakland Raiders.
4 - PHI: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
Kelly is an offensive mind. However, he is a smart football mind. He takes an athletic and versatile defensive lineman here. He knows to be successful he needs to develop a more solid defense. In doing so, he wants to get after the passer here.
5 - DET: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
Defensive end is a priority, but the Lions stick with best player available mentality and pick this solid DB. Milliner came from a prominent (dynasty-esque) Alabama program. Their head coach a solid defensive mind, and a DB coach; Saban has prepared Milliner well and would be a great addition to a very poor defensive back group.
6 - CLE: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
Browns need a pass rusher. Last year they couldn't sack a middle school QB. Moore is a fantastic, long, and quick edge rusher. He can drop in coverage, but he is at his best getting after the QB.
7 - ARI: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Cardinals need a lot of help. They start on the offensive line. There is not another QB worth taking here (or in the first round). I believe they will trying for Cassel, Matt Ryan, or Alex Smith. Arians knows he needs to get the ball down field to Floyd and Fitzgerald. However, any QB can do that, but if they aren't upright it won't matter.
8 - BUF: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
Bills take a pass rusher to go opposite Williams. Ansah has fallen a little bit due to his raw ability. However, this is an electric defensive specimen.
9 - NYJ: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
The Jets need help in a lot of areas. They have cut, cut, cut, and I am sure will cut some more before April's draft. However, it is a necessity to get a solid WR, and in the Jet's case, they need about 4-5. Patterson opposite their round 1 draft choice last year would be huge. It would give them two good WR's. Patterson can go deep, but has solid hands and much more of a possession receiver. This would be a great addition to a pedestrian offense.
10 - TEN: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
The Titans are taking a chance here. They could use some DB help, and possible Safety help (although there are non worth taking this high), but the best bet would be to protect your QB and Chris Johnson. Johnson didn't have a lot of confidence, although he never mentioned it, in his front line last year. This resulted in a bismal rushing season. Getting Warmack you get a physical, athletic, and strong offensive lineman. Once again, a Bama product that will produce in the NFL.
11 - SD: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
I originally had the Chargers taking Dion Jordan, but after recent events of an injury, not many people will spend a high draft pick on an individual coming off major surgery and rehab.
12 - MIA: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
A big run clogger in the middle, Hankins would replace the soon departed Starks. Miami has money to burn, but will start building from the inside out with youth, and athleticism. Sheldon Richardson is another option, but he proves to be more of a back end option in the first round draft.
13 - TB: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
The Buc's need some serious help in the secondary. There are multiple options including Trufant out of Washington, but Banks is the more complete player, a little taller, and more rangy. It is always a boost to play in the SEC as well, against some of the most physical players in the country.
14 - CAR: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
The defensive line of Carolina took a hit last year, and they passed on a few DT's that could have instantly upgraded their unit. This year, they choose to take an athletic DE/DT that can play either positions.
15 - NO: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
The Saints are looking to add some athletic defenders in their new look 3-4 defense. In this case, they take a chance on the sliding Jones. Once thought to be a top 5 pick, he has fallen to 15. He is a great value here, and will look to make an immediate impact on Ryan's defense.
16 - STL: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
It is a must to protect the future of the Rams, Bradford. Fisher is a smart man, and will not allow his QB to take a beating. The Rams have another pick in the top 25, and they will look for another WR if one stands out. Otherwise, defense and offensive line are huge needs to upgrade.
17 - PIT: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The Steelers need to reload on defense. The age has finally gotten to this defense, and the Pre-Madonna attitude has taken over the offense. The Steelers need to overhaul their defense, and patch up offense. Mingo is best value pick here, and a long, athletic pass rusher.
18 - DAL: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
Dallas is known for bigger offensive lineman. Fluker is no exception. A high quality lineman, out of Alabama, that would prove to upgrade their offensive line. The Cowboys are talking extension with Romo, and if it pans out, they need someone to protect him for the long haul, and open up lanes for the backfield.
19 - NYG: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
Te'o does not fall too far from the projected slot by some. He is a solid defender and as long as you can find him a woman in NY, I think he will be a great player. The Giants fill a need, and provide some much needed help on defense.
20 - CHI: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Bears reach. With no solid lineman prospects here the Bears add weapons for Cutler. This is too high for any TE to be taken, but I believe Hester will be on his way out. Austin provides a returner, great speed, dynamic slot receiver and would add an element similar to Percy Harvin of the Vikings. If he pans out, watch out, bears may put up more than 18 points a game.
21 - CIN: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
With LB's on the way out, its important to get the next best thing, and that is what Olgetree is. Although there are some character issues, Olgetree is a freak athlete at LB. He is a MLB in a 4-3, with the length of Manny Lawson, and speed of a SS.
22 - STL: Keenan Allen, WR, California
It is a no brainer to take a WR here. They get weapon for Bradford, and earlier they found him some protection. The Rams are looking to improve now, and will finally give Bradford some formidable weapons against NFL defenses.
23 - MIN: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Williams is a mirror image of Kevin Williams. Adding to the Williams tradition in Minnesota this is a fantastic pick. Athletic, strong, quick defensive lineman that has the potential of making the same impact as Shariff Floyd. Williams will be able to phase out Kevin Williams, while providing depth, and interior pass rush for a defense that needs an upgrade up front.
24 - IND: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
Indy needs help in the DB area to play alongside Vontae Davis. Trufant is projected higher, so this is a steal here.
25 - SEA: Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia
Seattle takes a big, flashy interior defensive lineman. Building on their idea of speed the Seahawks get tougher and, physically strong presence inside with Jenkins.
26 - GB: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
The Packers need a workhorse at RB. They need someone who can take a beating and keep on going. Lacy is a tough, quick running back who has solid hands. He came from a great program where he was counted on several times. He can run between the tackles, and press the edge. Lacy and DuJuan Harris would be a great 1-2 punch in the Packers backfield.
27 - HOU: Jonathan Cyprien, SS, Florida International
The Texans pass defense is terrible - every year. If they want to compete in the AFC, and find a way to win the need to get better on the back end. Cyprien was coveted by the 49ers, but are snatched up here. Solid cover skills and ball skills, Cyprien will provide much needed help at Safety.
28 - DEN: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Denver upgrades its interior, again. This gives them a pass rushing DT, while providing depth along the front line. Again, the thought is that improving the front line will improve the pass defense. Getting after QB's in the AFC (Example; Flacco) would prove to take the Broncos a long way.
29 - NE: Alex Okafor, DE, Texas
Patriots would rather have taken Austin or another receiver, but there is none worth taking here. They take a solid pass rusher, who can get after the QB. He is a 4-3 or 3-4 DE; strong, good hands, and quick feet.
30 - ATL: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Although the Falcons want Gonzalez back, Im not sold he is coming back. Regardless, this is another weapon on offense for Matt Ryan. There are no safeties, or DB's that deserve a grade high enough to be taken here. However, Eifert can provide some mismatches over the middle of the field to open up Roddy White and Julio Jones.
31 - SF: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
One of the building blocks that made Harbaugh so successful at Stanford was a multitude of TE's. What a great pair TE's at the 49ers, along with solid WR play will make them more explosive than ever.
32 - BAL: Matt Elam, SS, Florida
The Ravens need defensive back help. They can afford to take a reach here at 32. They could possibly trade out and add more picks. There is a growing sense in the Raven's organization that Ed Reed will leave. If so, Matt Elam is a solid replacement. He is a similar player to Reed - with a little less range. What he lacks in range, he makes up for with strength, savviness and ball skills.
