2014 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Last updated on Jul-05-2014 by Brad Kruse

DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK: Kaepernick's first full season as a starter was a little disappointing. He did break the 300-point barrier, but many envisioned much more. His completion percentage dropped from 62.4- to 58.4-percent. His yards per attempt dropped from 8.3 to 7.7. His rushing touchdowns dropped from five to four despite playing more games. His interception rate also nudged up from 1.4- to 1.9-percent. In summary, Kaepernick suffered some growing pains while the league adjusted to him. It wasn't all bad, though. His 21 passing touchdowns on 416 attempts (5-percent) is a reasonable conversion rate and better than some of the bigger name quarterbacks. This team doesn't look like they're going to open up the offense significantly, despite their claims. His receivers are clearly capable of supporting a small increase to the passing game with a healthy Michael Crabtree and newly acquired Stevie Johnson on board. Given his current ADP (QB10, 82.63 ADP), he has an opportunity to outperform his draft position. He has the kind of upside that you should look for from one of the last QB1s drafted.

Latest Update

Aug-19-14 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick played through multiple foot injuries for nearly all of last season

Colin Kaepernick ran for 502 yards in 10 starts, including the postseason, in 2012. After putting some dynamic highlights on tape in those playoffs, expectations were high and subsequently not met in 2013 as Kaepernick ran for basically the same amount of yards in 16 regular-season starts. There is a good reason for this plateau, a reason that Kaepernick has not spoken about until now.
The 49ers' quarterback played the 2013 season out after suffering two injuries to his left foot in Week 2 versus the Seahawks. Specifically, Kaepernick had a chipped bone in his forefoot and a ruptured capsule in the ball of his foot.
"It was something that was always there," Kaepernick told the Sacramento Bee. "Never spoke about it, never said anything about it because you're a football player, you play through pain. Unless you're being carted off, you should be on the field. If it's something you can play through, that's what you do."
Kapernick remained on the field in full practices and games for the rest of the year. He was listed on the injury report in Weeks 3, 6, 7 and 8 with a "foot" injury but was then removed from the report in Week 9.

Fantasy Analysis:

Fantasy owners were frustrated by the relatively low frequency and results of Kaepernick's rushes last season, and this certainly helps explain them. Now Kaep is fully healed and should be given the green light to create more with his legs in 2014. Add this health to the Niners' expressed desire to throw more often, and everything is lined up for Kaepernick to have a fantastic season. He is a steal as the 11th QB off of draft boards on average.

11.09 #9 World Ranked Player - Kaep in the 11th was too good to pass up. Didn't want the other guys to scoop on his value. QBs do go down and I'll have a solid QB2.

10.05 #28 World Ranked - I probably should have waited longer at QB, but I like Kaepernick's improved weapons to go along with his very productive legs. He's likely to punch in some rushing TD's as well.
