2014 Outlook:

Last updated on Jul-05-2014 by Brad Kruse

Hunter has played the role of handcuff to Frank Gore for a few years. He definitely has fresher legs than the former Miami Hurricanes back. Hunter's yards per carry average over the last three years have been 4.58 compared to Gore's 4.35. Normally, he would be in high demand in drafts, except there are a couple of younger backs named Hyde and Lattimore that will draw attention as well. The 49ers know what they have in Hunter and it appears unlikely they view him as their back for the future after adding RBs in each of the last three drafts.

Latest Update

Jul-27-14 49ers RB LaMichael James injured

James was carted off the field during the 49ers practice Sunday, with an apparent left arm injury, according to CSNBayArea.com. James is in line with 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore and 49ers RB Carlos Hyde to serve as Frank Gore's backup and potential successor. The injury is being evaluated further, and details will be forthcoming.

Fantasy Analysis:

This news follows word last week that 49ers RB Kendall Hunter had sustained a season-ending ACL tear. Suddenly, what looked like a crowded backfield a few weeks ago has become a lot easier to analyze. Gore is the starter, and will remain so as long as he's able to run effectively. RB Carlos Hyde is the top backup candidate, and will likely challenge Gore for carries as the season develops. Lattimore has been held out of organized practice, instead doing individual rehabiitation on the sidelines during camp. Out of the remaining healthy 49ers RBs, Hyde has the greatest upside.

18.05 FFToolbox - Brian Murphy - It probably wasn't the best idea to pick a running back who is eight months removed from popping his Achilles' tendon, but running back was dreadfully thin at this point, and this selection doesn't really cost me anything if Hunter can't regain his old form. If Hunter is healthy, it looks like he will share carries with Frank Gore and LaMichael James.

14.12 FantasyTaz - I am usually not a big believer in handcuffs and this pick wasn't made simply because I have Gore. I am high on Hunter as the guy to take over in SF when Gore is done and if fully healthy this year he should get a decent amount of touches and this team finds ways to get a good play-maker on the field. I think he has much more upside than LaMichael James.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #3
July 9th, 2013
13.10 FootballDiehards - Hunter and LaMichael James are expected to battle for carries behind Frank Gore. Hunter looked great before he tore an Achilles tendon. I'm hoping he's back at full speed, but James looked good down the stretch. Fingers crossed on this one.
