2013 Outlook: Quality Backup

Last updated on Nov-10-2013 by Daniel Kalles

Update 11-10-2013 - With Blackmon suspended for the season, Shorts is a low end WR1 in PPR

Update 10-25-2013 - Shorts has been playing through injury, but he is still being effective, especially in PPR leagues. He is definitely someone you want to be starting

Profile - There weren't high expectations of Shorts going into 2012, but that didn't stop him from becoming a name in fantasy football. Despite only playing in parts of 14 games (and with below average QBs), Shorts still managed to catch 55 passes for 979 yards and 7 touchdowns, becoming the big play receiver the Jags have been missing for years. Unfortunately Shorts will once again have to deal with a less than average QB throwing him the ball, but that won't stop him from getting plenty of looks (especially with fellow receiver Justin Blackmon sitting out the first 4 games due to suspension). Shorts and Blackmon complement each other well, so when Blackmon comes back it should only give Shorts more space to work. The Jags are a very bad team and will be losing most games, meaning they will have to throw the ball a lot. That's about the only thing going for receivers in this offense. Shorts should be drafted as a high end #3.

2013 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
2013 FFToolbox Staff Mock Draft #1
June 18th, 2013
7.01 FFToolbox - Jeb Gorham - Shorts averaged almost 70 yards and about 4 receptions per game with 7 TDs last season. If you take out his two low performing games these numbers jump significantly (about 81 yards and 4.5 receptions per game). First pick of the seventh round felt really good here. I would like to see his TDs jump this season, but all-in-all I can deal with his numbers and he is fairly consistent.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #2
July 2nd 2013
5.10 Fantasy Football QB - So many good players taken in the 5th! I could have reached in the 4th, but my need at RB prevented that from happening. I took a long reach for Shorts III. Perhaps too long... I'd actually prefer Shorts's situation if Blackmon wasn't suspended as I don't like the idea of him facing double-coverage. Still, in terms of consistency last year, he ranked in between Welker and Andre Johnson... yeah, not bad.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #1
June 25th, 2013
6.07 DynastyLeague Football - Blackmon might be the sexy pick but Shorts is the guy to own in Jax. Even with God awful QB play last year, Shorts performed like a beast.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #3
July 9th, 2013
6.08 TheHuddle - Wanted Brown to slide but missed by 5 picks. Shorts should be solid enough as a WR3.
