2014 Outlook: Super Sleeper (high risk/potential)Last updated on Jul-07-2014 by Mark Morales-Smith
Barner looked very good last preseason before injuring his ankle. He never worked his way back into a crowded rotation, but Jonathan Stewart has had numerous health issues and DeAngelo Williams is now 31 years old. This parting of the seas could open the door for Barner. The second-year back out of Oregon may be a dark horse, so don't let him fall off your radar in dynasty leagues. If this kid gets a shot this season, he may just make the most of it. Barner is a deep sleeper in redraft and a dynasty staple. Things must break in his favor; nonetheless, he has a real shot to be the Panthers' lead back very soon.
Chip Kelly continued turning the Philadelphia Eagles into University of Oregon-East on Tuesday. The Eagles acquired running back Kenjon Barner from the Panthers for a conditional seventh-round pick, bringing the total of former Ducks on the Eagles' current roster to nine.
Barner is a small-but-exciting player. He was drafted in the sixth round last year but saw only six carries in Carolina. As a senior at Oregon in 2012, Barner gained more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage and scored 23 touchdowns while being coached by Kelly.
It should be obvious to LeSean McCoy fans that Barner doesn't present a threat. He is a 5-foot-9, 195-pound player who profiles as only a change-of-pace back. Perhaps he will be Philly's next edition of Darren Sproles in a couple of years. In the present, Barner provides depth to a group that really needs it. McCoy has been bothered by a toe injury of late, and No. 3 RB Chris Polk has missed a lot of camp time due to a bad hamstring.
The Panthers are fine moving forward with DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert as their top three running backs.
