2014 Outlook: Bye Week Fill-in

The Bucs followed up the selection of Evans in the first round with Seferian-Jenkins in the second. He gives McCown another huge red-zone target and should beat out Brandon Myers and Tim Wright for the starting job. He's very athletic, having also played for the Washington Huskies basketball team. He possesses good hands and can beat up on smaller defenders. Rookie TEs don't typically make a big fantasy splash since the most important thing they have to learn is how to block and protect their QB. When he's on the field, he'll be an obvious threat. How well he learns to block and pass-protect will dictate that amount of time. He missed OTAs and minicamp due to Washington's late graduation, so he's a little behind the others already. His talent should ultimately win out and make him the starter sooner rather than later.

Editor's note: College fantasy football enthusiasts should already be very familiar with ASJ. He was highly-touted as the top fantasy TE in college football last year, although that never came to be. The University of Washington opted to use a more running back-friendly approach, as evidenced by the incredible season by RB Bishop Sankey. This meant ASJ was far more often used as a blocker and a decoy. What he can do immediately though is contribute around the red zone. Despite all his talent, do not draft this rookie expecting him to crack the Top 10, not for at least another year. It takes these guys time, more so than other positions.

Latest Update

Jul-31-14 Buccaneers rookie TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins is impressing team

NFL Network reporter Daniel Jeremiah attended Tampa Bay's training camp and had this to say about the Buccaneers rookie tight end, "Bucs are pumped about ASJ's play in camp. He's picked things up quickly and made a lot of plays." Austin Seferian-Jenkins is currently in a battle in camp with fellow TEs Tim Wright and Brandon Myers. He sports a massive 6'7/267 pound frame and was drafted in the 2nd round at pick 38. Although the Buccaneer higher-ups might be impressed, coach Lovie Smith still has to be persuaded.

Fantasy Analysis:

Reports are all over the place with Seferian-Jenkins. Just this past Monday, head coach Lovie Smith said he was 'behind a lot' mostly due to his trying to get in shape while also learning the playbook after late graduation rules prevented him from entering camp on time. Jenkins has great ability but the TE position is muddy in Tampa with last year's breakout Tim Wright and the offseason signing of Brandon Myers. There is no clear front-runner here and the position should be decided by who plays best in preseason games.
