2009 Outlook: Gamble (high risk)

It is hard to label Terrell Owens as anything but a gamble. It seems like he always falls down fantasy drafts because of that, but Owens consistently puts up big numbers. The only time in the last nine years when he has failed to reach the 1,000 yard plateau was when he was injured in 2005. During that span, not including 2005, Owens has also caught at least nine touchdown passes. His new surroundings in Buffalo might be a concern to some fantasy owners, but it should not be. Owens did perfectly fine in 2004 during his first campaign in Philadelphia and was nearly as impressive two years later when he became a Dallas Cowboy. Fellow wide receiver Lee Evans is talented enough to make the opposition worry about more than just Owens, and the Bills offense could explode and Owens will be the reason.

8/16 Update: Owens caught two passes for 27 yards during the team's opening preseason game against Tennessee. Considering Trent Edwards only threw four passes the entire game before being benched, Owens had a good outing. He missed the second game with a sprained toe, but that is obviously nothing to be concerned about. The Buffalo offense in general looked much more comfortable in their hurry-up style in the second preseason game and once Owens becomes a part of that, it could be very good for fantasy owners of Owens.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 3.08 Rotoworld.com - Pick made based on Pre-Draft List
June 3.10 CBSSports.com - He's not great in PPR leagues, especially now in Buffalo, but he'll still get his share of yards and touchdowns. He's as good a No. 2 Fantasy WR as you'll find.
July 3.10 KFFL.com - I'm not sold on Owens, but I think he's the best receiver at this spot, and I need a wideout. He should approach double digits in touchdowns and should top 1,000 yards and 70 receptions, especially if Trent Edwards continues to develop. Lee Evans should keep defenses off of TO at least part of the time. Also, Owens has been great in his first year with a new team, and he's still playing for a contract for 2010.
