2009 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

The acquisition of Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez (from Kansas City for a 2nd round pick in 2010) will provide quarterback Matt Ryan another solid target to complement Michael Turner and Roddy White in the Falcons offense. Gonzalez will have a tremendous fantasy impact for Atlanta in 2009, giving the Falcons a new dynamic to their offense that had been sorely lacking in a big playmaking tight end who can stretch the field and give the Falcons a threat in the red-zone.

Tony Gonzalez, now 33 years old, caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns last season for Kansas City. The future Hall of Famer owns NFL career records for tight ends with receptions (916), yards receiving (10,940), receiving touchdowns (76) and 100-yard receiving games (26).

Fantasy football owners know what they are getting when they draft Tony Gonzalez: consistency. Tony Gonzalez is not only the best at his position, but he has been the best every season for the past decade. Now that Gonzalez will be catching passes for the league's most promising QB prospect in Matt Ryan, Gonzalez is worthy of being the first tight end off the board in 2009 fantasy drafts. Fantasy owners can lock in 90 catches for 1,000 yards and 10 TD's for Tony Gonzalez in 2009.

Update 8/21

Gonzalez may benefit the most from the Harry Douglas injury because Douglas (a deadly runner after the catch) was Gonzalez' competition for targets in the underneath passing game with White and Jenkins as deeper threats in the Falcons offense. Matt Ryan will now likely look to Gonzalez more often underneath, which could lead to another huge season for Gonzalez. Fantasy owners should draft Gonzalez with confidence as a top three tight end.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 4.06 ThunderingBlurb.com - Thought hard again about other positions but value-wise, Gonzo is the pick. (plus people keep stealing my picks. :)) He's produced 99 and 96 catches with bad Qbs in the last two years - I think he can at least match it with Ryan there, and post some very good TD totals as well maybe even equaling his ten (or more) from 2008. Plus he has a little chip on his shoulder again which I like.
June 4.11 FFToday.com - Some really good fantasy players were drafted prior to this pick (Witten, Gates, Rodgers, Grant), but it still left me with a tough decision at this pick between a top QB like Phillip Rivers, an excellent WR2 such as Chad Ochocinco or Vincent Jackson or the last of the top tier TE. I went with the TE, which is a position you can really make a difference at in a PPR scoring league. It is going to be odd seeing Gonzo in a Falcons uniform, but Matt Ryan looks like the real deal and should learn quickly to use his new TE early and often so we still end up with a typical, Tony Gonzalez year.
July 6.02 FFToday.com - In fairness to DeSean Jackson, I spent my entire 5.11 pick commentary on Gonzo, so turnabout is fair play. Jackson was my best option at that pick, and I did expect FansFF to pull at least one if not two WR on the turn. Jackson was great as a rookie last season. You can see the natural talent bubbling over in this kid. The Eagles bolstered their offensive line like nobody's business in the off-season, giving Donovan McNabb lots of time to pick and choose his receiving options. Whether the Eagles plan to ratchet down Westbrook's workload or not, Jackson in entrenched as the Eagles' top wideout.
