2008 Outlook: Over the Hill (decreased production)

Jon Kitna threw for over 4,000 yards last season, but only had 18 touchdowns. That ranked sixth in the NFL in passing yards, but just tied for 15th in touchdown passes. Tying for the most interceptions with 20 does not make fantasy owners too excited about Kitna either. Making matters worse is the fact that new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto wants to run more. That might not happen, but the Lions will at least spend a week or two trying. Kitna, who will turn 36 during the season, should not be a starting quarterback in most fantasy leagues, but he will put up big numbers on occasion.

8/7 Update: In his limited action in the opening preseason contest against the defending Super Bowl champions, Kitna looked very impressive. Kitna only played in a couple of series, but the first one ended in a perfect drive highlighted by a 20 yard touchdown pass to Roy Williams. On the evening, Kitna went 6-of-7 for 106 yards and looked composed and under control. Possibly even more importantly, the veteran was mobile and created plays with his feet. At times he looked more like 25 than 35. Yet, that could still catch up to him later in the season.
