2009 Outlook: Quality Backup

Statistically, 2008 was the worst year of Matt Hasselbeck's career. It was also the shortest since his sophomore season with Green Bay. Through seven games, Hasselbeck managed only five touchdowns against 10 interceptions and posted his worst completion percentage since his days as a Brett Favre understudy. Against Hasselbeck's career body of work, those numbers look like an anomaly, and it would be easy to write them off to the back pain that plagued him all season long. But those hoping for a bounce back season in 2009 should keep in mind that Hasselbeck -- who turns 34 in September -- will be working under a new offensive coordinator and a new head coach, learning a new offense, throwing to some new, largely untested receivers, and is still a significant injury risk. Back problems have a way of lingering and, while Hasselbeck may have "rehabilitated" without surgery and may be feeling well now, we'll get a better sense of where he's truly at after he gets driven to the turf by a 290lb lineman. We have him ranked at #14, not because we doubt his talent, but because of his questionable health.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 10.06 ThunderingBlurb.com - I don't love most of my RB/WR options here - I mean there is value but I think a higher value at QB2 which I need. I expect Hass (along with his whole team) will bounce back in this division. I like him a ton but his sched has some rough patches so I am happier to use him only as a bye or injury starter - although he might do as a solid player for certain matchups throughout the season, though as QB2 I don't need him to do it all the time.
June 10.03 CBSSports.com - He's healthy and has an improved receiving corps. He's a good No. 2 QB with the chance to start in most leagues if he comes back at 100 percent.
July 9.08 TheHuddle.com - Warner is kinda old, after all.
Aug. 9.07 TheHuddle.com - Best to cover my bases at quarterback with Hasselbeck, whoラif his line can keep him uprightラhas a good shot at being one of fantasy's biggest bouncebacks this year.
