2011 Outlook:
With number two receiver Michael Jenkins suffering a shoulder injury that will sideline him for the next four to six weeks, veteran Brian Finneran, at age 34 and now in his tenth season in the league, finds himself starting opposite Pro Bowler Roddy White on the Falcons first official depth chart. Finneran, who was on the bubble heading into training camp will now be competing with Eric Weems, Harry Douglas, who is day to day coming off knee surgery, and rookie Kerry Meier for a starting job. Finneran is a capable receiver, but has seen his role diminish in recent years including last year when he caught a meager 11 passes for 111 yards.
The favorite in this position battle is Harry Douglas, but he will be sidelined for Atlanta's preseason opener against Kansas City. Until the team feels that Douglas is completely healthy, its Finneran's job to lose. The Falcons initial depth chart also tells us that no matter how high the team is on rookie Kerry Meier, he isn't ready for primetime just yet. Finneran has almost no upside, which limits his fantasy potential even if he holds onto the starting job heading into the season.
Update 8/17/10
Finneran started opposite Pro Bowler Roddy White for Atlanta's preseason opener against Kansas City, but did not catch a pass. With Harry Douglas expected to play this week against New England, Finneran will be fighting to hold onto his starting job. Eric Weems seems destined for special teams, but rookie Kerry Meier (who the Falcons are high on) caught two passes for 26 yards against the Chiefs. At this point, Douglas and Meier have significantly more upside than the aging Finneran.
Update 8/19/10
Finneran caught one pass for eight yards in Atlanta's second preseason game against the New England Patriots. With Harry Douglas returning to the lineup, Finneran's fantasy upside is extremely limited.
Update 8/28/10
Finneran had a strong game on Friday night against the Miami Dolphins, reeling in a five yard touchdown pass (his only grab of the game) from Chris Redman in the fourth quarter of Atlanta's preseason victory. With upstart rookie Kerry Meier (who made a strong impression this preseason) on injured reserve with a knee injury, Finneran's role as the number four option in the Falcons' passing game is secure at this point, giving him some value in the deepest of fantasy leagues.
