RB Jamal Lewis, CLE

2009 Outlook: Quality Backup
Jamal Lewis is getting up there in age, but he has rushed for over 900 yards in each of his eight seasons in the NFL. During his two years in Cleveland he has amassed 2,306 yards on the ground and a grand total of 15 trips to the end zone. Unfortunately, only four of those touchdowns came in 2008. There are not any other options behind Lewis to take carries away from him, so he should be a pretty safe selection. This could be an exceptionally good campaign for Lewis if Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson continue to struggle with the passing game. That is bad news for the Browns as a team if the passing game is that bad, but it would be good for owners of Lewis. In most leagues Lewis would be a solid second running back or a great third back.
8/19 Update: Lewis will not get many carries during the preseason and his seven carries against Green Bay in the Browns' preseason opener might be the most carries he sees during a preseason game. If his seven carries against the Packers were any indication, Lewis will be back to his usual ways. He only garnered 17 yards and had a long of five, but Lewis is a workhorse and will be the team's top rusher as long as he is healthy.

RapidDraft.com - There are at least three receivers I'd be fine with here, but Lewis is the last primary back on the board, and his bye differs from those of both of my starting runners. Even if more carries go to Jerome Harrison and/or James Davis this year (as they should), Lewis will be the goal-line guy. |

FantasySharks.com - As a backup and #3 RB, Jamal Lewis will do. He'll be getting the ball a lot and if his body stays together, he could actually surprise a little too. |
