RB - #49 WAS 8 years 28 6'0 207

2009 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Pro's: Coming off a 1,487 yard season (his highest rush total since 2005) and had six-100 yard games. Averaged 4.3 yards per carry. Scored nine touchdowns. A workhorse back, Portis carried the rock 342 times last season and gets the majority of the goal line attempts. Strong all-around game, including as receiver and blocker, keeps him on the field. Runs very hard. The Redskins will continue to lean on Portis, making him one of the few remaining running backs that will have a true tag-team partner. When healthy, offensive line continually opens holes for ground game.

Con's: Constant use over his career makes him an old 28 (his season opening age). Wore down over second half of the season. Over final eight games, averaged 68 rush yards, topped 80 yards only once and scored two touchdowns. (In fairness, the Redskins played some of the top defenses in that span, but Portis did little against the Bengals and Niners as well.) No longer has speed to break big plays; longest run on the season was 31 yards. Caught 19 fewer passes than career-best 47 in '07. Offensive line has age, injury and depth issues.

Analysis: Fears of Portis getting run into the ground offset by steady and strong production, though expect a drop off sooner than later. Wait until top backs are off the board, but Portis remains a RB1 worthy of late first-early second round status.

June 2.06 TheHuddle.com - Portis was one of the RBs I considered in the first round before ultimately going with a wideout. That he's here in R2 speaks to the depth of the RBs this yearï¾—and the logic behind grabbing an elite WR in R1.
July 2.08 ThunderingBlurb.com - Portis tends to play really well for most of the season, wearing down at the end of the season. It makes him dicey in that you know he'll put up solid points overall but you risk issues due to injury. Still the overall value of the guy, here most of the way through the second, is rock solid and if he can hold together, he will put up very good points. In truth, there are guys in the first round with similiar issues and upside so between this and Moss, I liek the first two rounds of value.
Aug. 3.02 KFFL.com - Yeah, figured there'd be plenty of these to choose from here. Losing touches? Just keeping him fresh.
