RB Maurice Morris, DET

2009 Outlook: Deep-league Only
The Lions picked up Maurice Morris as a free agent from the Seahawks during the offseason. After Kevin Smith, the Lions were in desperate need of a quality backup rusher. Morris rushed for 574 yards for the Seahawks last season, but failed to reach the end zone. In 2007 he had his best season of his professional career after being drafted in the second round in 2002. Morris ran for 628 yards and rushed for four of his five career touchdowns during that season. The good news about Morris is that he can catch the ball out of the backfield. In fact, he nearly has as many receiving touchdowns during his career as he does rushing touchdowns. Still, it would take an injury to Smith to make Morris even worth a thought in most fantasy leagues.
8/8 Update: Morris has been pretty impressive so far during camp and the Lions seem happy to have him as Smith's backup. Yet, there simply will not be enough carries to go around to make him a viable fantasy option and Smith is probably not worth handcuffing at this point, so Morris continues to have very little fantasy value as long as Smith is healthy.
