RB Ladell Betts, WAS
<< Back to Profiles List
With a quality running back like Betts on the roster, the Redskins would seem to be an ideal candidate to run the trendy two-back system (especially when the former Iowa Hawkeye generated 1,154 rush yards and 4.7 ypc filling in for an injured Clinton Portis during the '07 season). Yet Portis has totted the rock over 300 times in each of the last two seasons, while Betts has had 154 carries -- only 61 last season -- and then done little with those opportunities. During that span, he has rarely flashed enough burst to warrant more looks, averaging 3.5 yards per attempt with three total scores. At worst, Betts remains a top-notch handcuff and the Redskins have once again talked about getting the former Iowa Hawkeye involved more in the passing game. If CP goes down, Betts is a RB2 option; otherwise he is late-round fantasy fodder for all non-Portis owners.
9/6 - Betts remains the Redskins third-down back and primary backup to Clinton Portis entering the season, but he is facing competition from training camp darling Marcus Mason, who made the final roster. Portis owners should continue to draft Betts as the handcuff, but monitor the situation early on as there is some belief on the ground that Mason would slide in as another short yardage if needed because Betts has previously struggled in that role.

FFToolbox.com - Clinton Portis always seems like he is one hit away from a three week absence and the all-around Betts has shown he can productive in the starting role. The Redskins are also once again making noise about getting Betts more touches, but this pick is more about hoping for a home run then worrying about his week-to-week use as a backup. |
