2009 Outlook: Quality Backup

Larry Johnson will be 30 years old this season and we all know what that means for running backs. While it's possible Johnson could have a great year, it is highly unlikely. To go along with turning 30 we need to look at what LJ has done the past couple of years. In 2007 he played in 8 games and last year he played in just 12 games. I think carrying the ball 752 times in 2005 and 2006 may have taken its toll on him. I guess the short of the long here is that Johnson just isn't the back fantasy owners coveted a few years ago. In fact it wouldn't surprise me to see Johnson lose his starting role at some point this season as the Chiefs look to phase him out of the offense.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 5.06 CBSSports.com
June 6.12 KFFL.com - LJ will be a sound investment as a No. 3 this year. He showed improved burst last year when he wasn't suspended or deactivated. Jamaal Charles will probably push him for passing downs, but I'm willing to find out if Johnson can recapture his 30-reception days in what may be a more Pro-style offense.
July 4.10 eCouchCoach.com - Larry told me he wasn't going to get in trouble in the offseason by partying or going to any bars, and I believe him. Anyway, with the new QB situation and changing the team offense, I am willing to take the risk in picking up LJ.
