2009 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

Larry Fitzgerald's solid performance in the regular season (96 catches, 1,431 yards and 12 touchdowns) combined with his amazing playoff run in which he recorded 30 catches for 546 yards and a playoff-record seven scores -- all with a broken left thumb and torn cartilage between two fingers -- has propelled him into the #1 ranking among all wide receivers in the NFL and in fantasy football.

If Kurt Warner stays upright and on the field in 2009, then Fitzgerald will put up astronomical numbers for fantasy owners who select him in the 1st or 2nd rounds of fantasy drafts in 2009. Fitzgerald is the best jump ball wide receiver in the game, and his ability after the catch makes him even more dangerous. It is very realistic that Fitzgerald could eclipse 100 catches for 1,400 yards and 14 TD's in 2009 if both Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin are healthy -- making him worthy of being the first wide receiver off the board in fantasy drafts in 2009.

Update 8/21

Fitzgerald has re-structured his contract in an attempt to ease the Cardinals' salary cap crunch. Rotoworld.com reports: "According to NFLPA figures, this transaction increased Fitzgerald's 2009 cap number from $10.75 million to $10.90 million. His 2010 cap number decreased by $150,000. His 2009 base salary is now $1.6 million (down from $4.6 million), although he received about $3.1 million in the form of a roster bonus and the status of his incentive clauses is uncertain. This move also eliminated Fitzgerald's no-trade clause. Fitzgerald's deal is still set to expire at the end of the 2011 season."

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 1.09 FFToday.com - At 1.09 I'm sitting looking at some very similarly ranked 2nd tier RB, and the top tier WR. I strongly considered Frank Gore, and DeAngelo Williams to a lesser extent. I decided to go WR to guarantee myself one of Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson or Randy Moss. It is really a toss up for me between Fitz and AJ. I went with Fitz because if there was a chance either one would fall to my second round pick, it was going to be AJ.
June 1.07 TheHuddle.com - With Jackson going right before my pick, there's no back left who stands out. So I'll take the best receiver on the board and see what comes back my way in Round 2.
July 1.04 CBSSports.com - It's probably early to look wide receiver here, but he will produce enough to make it worth it by the end of the season.
Aug. 1.08 ThunderingBlurb.com - Given previous mocks, drafts and the increasingly early pickign of WRs in all of the above, I figured Fitzy (I call him Fitzy cause we're tight like that) would be long gone. Really any of the WR Trio (Fitz, AJ or Moss) would be wonderful here. Fitzgerald should have another great season, plenty of catches and carry me most weeks at the WR position. Only question mark is when Warner might remember he's old and injury prone. Here's hoping his luck holds out another year.
