2009 Outlook: Bust (overvalued)

Most fantasy experts predicted there was no way Roethlisberger would match his 32 touchdown passes from 2007 -- guess what, he didn't come close. The Steelers gave up the second least points in the NFL in 2008 and this offense is ball control all the way. Big Ben should be expected to throw 15-20 TDs per season, which ranks him between 12th-15th among fantasy QBs heading into 2009. His career touchdown totals over his first five seasons are 17, 17, 18, 32 and 17. He is a mediocre fantasy quarterback at best and is a big injury risk as his offensive line continues to make him look like he just rents the distance with Manny Pacquiao . Roethlisberger has been sacked 46 or more times in each of his last three seasons, and eventually he's going to suffer a serious injury. They paid him a boatload of money (8 years , $102 million), so now it's time to start protecting their investment . The Steelers failed to draft any impact O-lineman in the 2009 draft (selected DL Ziggy Hood in the first round), so offensive line play could be a real problem in '09.

June 8.01 ThunderingBlurb.com - With Schaub as a QB, I need to secure a backup/committee member who doesn't miss a lot of games and Big Ben has been good for 15-16 games the last two years. It;s a tad early to grab a backup but some other positions I need to fill or players I like would be a tad too early. On the other hand if I let Roethlisberger go, there is a chance he may not be there by the time the wheel comes back around. So early, but it makes the position more secure for me.
July 8.07 FFToolbox.com - Admittedly, having Big Ben as my starter was not the plan, but thatメs not to say I am not a fan of the Steelers QB this year. Expect his final numbers to be a happy medium between the 17 scores he tossed last year and the 30+ he threw the year before. Iメll get another passer option shortly and play the match ups, not a problem.
