2013 Outlook: Quality Backup

Last updated on Oct-21-2013 by Rob Warner

UPDATE (10/21): Roethlisberger is averaging an impressive 276 yards per game but has just seven touchdowns and five interceptions through six games. For the rest of the season, the Steelers have a mediocre passing schedule as they face the 17th most favorable schedule for opposing quarterbacks.

PROFILE: The Steelers fell from 12th to 21st in total offense last season (21 PPG), and lost downfield threat WR Mike Wallace to Miami. Time is ticking on the 31 year old Big Ben as he's yet to complete a full slate of games since 2008 (missed three games last season). Roethlisberger averaged 20.5 fantasy PPG last season and posted an impressive 26 TDs to 8 INTs - a stat line that will be very difficult to duplicate considering that Wallace accounted for 8 TDs and TE Heath Miller (major question mark following knee surgery) had another 8 TDs. The Steelers' limited salary cap space stopped the front office from replacing Wallace and this offense is shaping up to mediocre, making Big Ben best drafted as a high end QB2 in 2013.

12.05 FFToolbox - Brian Murphy - Again, the guy I wanted -- DeAngelo Williams in this case -- flies off the board with the prior pick. By now, I'm throwing a fit. I usually play in two-QB leagues. If that was the case in this league, I wouldn't have waited until the 12th round to get my second quarterback. With each of us starting only one quarterback, some very good players dropped a long way in this draft. Case in point, Big Ben, who is still a top-notch QB2 without Mike Wallace. I would like to use Roethlisberger as trade bait since I know I am never going to bench Russell Wilson outside of his bye week. But with Wilson not on bye until Week 12, I probably have to keep Ben for the long haul.

14.03 FootballDiehards - I always seem to gravitate to Big Ben as my QB2 -- if for no other reason than it's safe to assume he'll be on the field as long as he's healthy (something that's admittedly not a lock). In hindsight, wishing I would have waited and nabbed Carson Palmer later.
