2009 Outlook: Quality Backup

In 2008, Berrian signed a six-year, $43.4 million free agent contract with Vikings. Bernard finished his first season in purple with 964 yards, on just 49 catches for an impressive 19.8 yards per catch. He found the end-zone seven times in 2008 and enters 2009 as the Vikings' deep threat. He started slow in 2008 but caught fire (four straight games with a TD) once Gus Frerotte went under center. His value could see a spike if Rosenfels wins the quarterback competition. The addition of first-round pick Percy Harvin should limit the double teams as most defenses will be concentrating on stocking the Vikings' league leading rushing attack. BB is a borderline No. 2/No. 3 Fantasy WR heading into 2009 and makes for a good value between the 6th and 7th rounds.

UPDATE: Berrian had to be carted off the field with a hamstring injury during the Vikings first preseason game. He should be on the field week 1 but his injury status might cause him to slide down some draft boards I would drop him outside the top 25 WRs.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 7.08 Rotoworld.com - Pick made based on Pre-Draft List
June 7.02 FFToday.com - Following up the Avery pick, Berrian fits the bill as a good WR2/WR3 with nice potential to outperform his draft position. He hasn't topped 1,000 yards in his career, but considering the quarterbacks he's been working with, his stats look very good. Last year, he didn't catch a lot of passes but turned only 48 of them into 964 yards and 7 TD. That is a 20.1 yard per catch average. One has to wonder how much he could benefit if/when Brett Favre comes to town.
July 8.02 FFToday.com - I might be sacrificing some catches but I'm going with upside over some more experienced, steady-Eddie type receivers still on the board. Berrian has never had a good NFL QB, which is a contributing factor to his low catch-to-target ratio. If Sage Rosenfels can do better than Tarvaris Jackson - and I think he can - then Berrian could enjoy a career year, even on similar targets as in the past.
Aug. 6.05 ThunderingBlurb.com - Berrian's leg should get better soon and while it may take him a while to get up to speed with Favre (well - that's true of the whole offense at this late date) he should have some big games. Not having to set lineups, means I don't have to worry about when.
