2009 Outlook: Quality Backup
With the departure of Coles this off season Jerricho Cotchery becomes the Jets' new number one receiver. Up until now Cotchery has been a number two man his entire career. It will be interesting to see how Jerricho reacts to the attention he gets as the number one guy. In the past we've seen other number two men become the primary target and the results have been less than exciting. The adjustment from the two to the one position is more difficult than expected. For Cotchery I don't think this will be the case. Jerricho's numbers won't be as good this year because of other reasons, namely the quarterback. No matter who starts for the Jets under center this season they won't throw the ball Cotchery's direction enough. I like Jerricho, but I don't think he'll be a great fantasy asset this season.

FantasyFootballTrader.com - If necessity is the mother of invention, Cotchery's about to get invented like a mother. Coles is gone and takes his 117 targets from last year with him. Cotch had 111 targets WITH Laveranues on board. A #1 WR that had over 100 targets in 2008, backed by a very good O-line and on a team that WILL have success running the ball. Rookie QB be damned. The Jets will sprinkle in the pass and we know where the majority of those passes will be going. |

ThunderingBlurb.com - Hard to know what to make of Cotchery's value with Sanchez officially 'the man' now. It won't be a prolific Martz-offense but he's the #1 WR there so if a throw isn't to Washington or Keller, it'll probably be to Cotch. As my fourth WR, he works well and has the potential to have the occasional big game which works well for the BEst Ball format. I don't need production every day - just occasionally and he should get me that at minimum, with room for more. |
